is the first volume of The Encyclopedia of Religion, published in 1987 by Mircea Eliade in collaboration with editor-in-chief Czeslaw Milosz. In the book's preface, the editors first note that this volume is based on a questionnaire, the questionnaire being completed by interested researchers, the questionnaire being sent to Eliade (pp. 3–7). The book is divided into two parts, the first part covers the major religions, and the second part the minor religious movements. In the section on major religions, The Encyclopedia of Religion encompasses the traditional Western religions, namely Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism, with relevant entries on their prehistory, doctrine, rituals, institutional forms, and world outlook. On the other hand, the book covers a variety of related religions in South and Central America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Volumes 2 and 3 cover the major indigenous and world religions of the Americas and Africa. The Encyclopedia of Religion, Mircea Eliade, with Mircea Eliade.
